About Chlamydia and Gonorrhea

Both Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are very common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that can be passed from person-to-person through unprotected oral, vaginal, and anal sex.

Some people who have Chlamydia or Gonorrhea may not show any symptoms at all. However, those who do experience symptoms may have:

  • Abnormal vaginal or penile discharge
  • Pain and burning during urination
  • Abnormal rectal discharge and/or bleeding

Both infections are easily treated with a course of antibiotics and short period of abstaining from sexual contact and intercourse. If an infection goes untreated, more serious complications may arise such as scarring, or pelvic inflammatory disease.

The CT/GC Studies will be evaluating the efficacy of an investigational medication for preventing future Chlamydia or Gonorrhea infections.

What is a Clinical Research Study?

A Clinical Research Study (also called a clinical trial) is a medical study that helps answer important questions about an investigational drug or device, such as: does it work, or how effective is it compared to another drug/device?

All medications must be tested in clinical research studies before they can be approved by regulatory authorities for doctors to prescribe to patients. Without people taking part in these studies, we would have no new treatments. The volunteers who participate in clinical research studies play a major role in helping to advance medicine.
